The Clinical Pharmacy Specialist in the Emergency Department provides expert medication management and collaborates closely with ED staff to ensure safe, effective pharmacotherapy during critical patient care. Responsibilities include performing medication histories, processing orders, developing emergency medicine protocols, and participating in education and quality assurance initiatives. This role requires a licensed pharmacist with hospital experience and a strong focus on emergency medicine pharmacotherapy and patient safety.
Clinical Speciality Pharmacist – Emergency Department

Join our dynamic Emergency Department team as a Clinicial Speciality Pharmacist, where you'll play a critical role in patient care through expert medication management and collaboration with frontline clinical staff.
This position has a strong focus on medication history, including supervising and verifying the work of medication history technicians, as well as performing medication histories directly. You’ll be embedded in the Emergency Department, working side-by-side with nurses, providers, and other ED staff to ensure safe and effective medication use.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide real-time medication management recommendations to ED providers.
- Process ED medication orders and respond to drug information requests.
- Assist nurses with Omnicell-related issues and medication administration questions.
- Serve as a clinical resource at the point of care, supporting safe and informed decision-making.
Additional Expectations:
- On occasion, you may be asked to cover in the central phamracy either during meal breaks or for full shifts. Competency in central pharmacy operations is essential.
- Flexibility, strong communication skills, and a collaborative mindset are key to success in this fast-paced, patient-centered environment.
Qualifications:
- Education: Minimum requirement of Bachelor of Science (BS) or Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) in pharmacy degree.
- Licensure: Requires a current pharmacist license from state of practice.
- Experience: Completed PGY-1 or 3 years hospital pharmacy experience in specialty area.
- Preferred Experience: Completed PGY-2 in specality area.
- Certifications: Eligible for Board of Pharmacy Specialties certification (preferred in area of specialty practice).
Key Responsibilities:
1. Clinical Expertise and Patient Care:
• Collaborate with ED physicians, nurses, and other healthcare providers to design, implement, and monitor individualized medication therapy plans.
• Provide real-time recommendations during medical emergencies, including trauma resuscitations, sepsis management, and cardiac arrests (e.g., ACLS and PALS protocols).
• Monitor and optimize drug therapy for acute and critically ill patients.
• Ensure appropriate dosing, especially for high-risk and narrow therapeutic index medications.
2. Emergency Medicine Protocol Development:
• Develop, implement, and review evidence-based treatment protocols and guidelines tailored to emergency medicine.
• Participate in antimicrobial stewardship by optimizing antibiotic use in the ED.
• Assist in the creation and revision of order sets for rapid response scenarios (e.g., stroke, STEMI, and anaphylaxis).
3. Medication Safety and Quality Assurance:
• Support medication reconciliation upon patient admission, transfer, and discharge.
• Monitor for and prevent adverse drug events, medication errors, and interactions.
• Contribute to quality improvement initiatives focused on enhancing medication safety and patient outcomes in the ED.
4. Education and Training:
• Provide education to ED staff, including physicians, nurses, pharmacy students, and residents, on emergency pharmacotherapy and medication safety.
• Precept pharmacy residents and students in clinical rotations, fostering professional growth and development.
• Stay current on advancements in emergency medicine pharmacotherapy and disseminate knowledge through formal and informal education.
5. Leadership and Collaboration:
• Serve as a subject matter expert in emergency medicine pharmacotherapy.
• Actively participate in ED rounds, case discussions, and multidisciplinary team meetings.
• Collaborate with hospital committees to advance clinical pharmacy practices in emergency care.
