The Primary Care-Certified Medical Assistant supports primary care providers by preparing patients for examinations, performing basic clinical procedures, and managing patient documentation in an outpatient setting. This role requires certification, proficiency with EHR systems, and the ability to multitask in a fast-paced healthcare environment. The position emphasizes compassionate, patient-centered care and collaboration with clinical teams to ensure quality outcomes.

Overview:
Job Description:
• Responsible for coordinating care and building relationships with patients in partnership with Mercy Primary Care Providers.
• Cleans and stocks examination rooms including laying out special equipment or supplies to be used during a patient visit.
• Escorts patient to the examination room and prepares patient for examination and treatment in a respectful and considerate manner.
• Prepares patient for visit with provider by completing Advanced Standard room process including entering the chief complaint; taking patient vital signs; reviewing patient history and allergies; completing a thorough medication reconciliation; working the Encounter Guide including helping to close any open care gaps such as fall risk, depression screening, breast cancer screening, colorectal cancer screening, and diabetic eye exams; rechecking elevated blood pressures; and completing needed documentation in Epic for yearly preventative visits as needed.
• Assists with any needed in-office testing including, but not limited to, drawing blood, completing mental status exams, EKG’s, walking oxygen studies and point of care testing.
• Administer vaccines and other injections within scope of practice.
• Assists provider with procedures.
• Inputs orders as needed to aid provider and clinical care team.
• Schedules follow up appointments when needed per office policy.
• Ensures excellent consumer experience.
• Collaborates with providers and clinical care team to monitor and coordinate delivery of the care plan.
Additional monthly duties as assigned by clinic manger (e.g., injection refrigerator temperature logs, checking sample log daily, ensuring oxygen levels/tanks resupplied, expired lab supplies checked, order medical supplies, etc.).
Performs other work duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications
Education:
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• New hire must attend MA Clinic Academy training.
• Must have completed all MA Competencies
Certification:
• Must actively maintain MA certification.
• Caregivers must actively maintain their certification, or they will be transitioned to the Medical Assistant title.
• Caregivers can be hired as a Certified Medical Assistant if they are a Certified/Registered Medical Assistant.
Additional minimum requirement(s) only for Hospital Outpatient Departments
Certification(s): BLS (Basic Life Support)
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience: One year of applicable patient care experience in an outpatient or ambulatory care setting.
Education: Graduate from an accredited Medical Assistant program
Preferred requirement(s) for non-HOD Clinics:
Certification(s): BLS (Basic Life Support)
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Complete Advanced Standard Rooming with overall achievement >= 90% for the last 6 months including:
AWV questionnaire and documentation.
Thorough Medication Reconciliation
Closing all open care gaps as indicated Encounter Guide (Fall Risk, Depression, Breast Cancer Screening, Colorectal Cancer Screening, and Diabetes Eye Exam)
Blood Pressure Recheck for patients with elevated initial blood pressure reading
Completion of Patient Experience Conversation
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• Proficiency with EHR systems and clinical documentation.
• Ability to multitask and adapt in a fast-paced clinical environment.
• Knowledge of common outpatient procedures and equipment.
• Commitment to patient-centered care and professional growth.
• Demonstrates knowledge of varying differences and behaviors among populations served.
Work Environment:
• Outpatient clinical setting with frequent patient interaction.
• Requires standing, walking, lifting, and use of clinical equipment.
• Potential exposure to infectious materials; PPE provided.
Physical Requirements:
• Position requires the ability to push, pull, and/or lift 50 lbs on a regular basis.
• Position requires prolonged standing and walking during each shift.
• Position requires the ability to grip, reach, bend, kneel, twist, and squat to perform duties.
