Unit Description – Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU)
Type of Care:
- The PACU provides immediate post-operative care for patients recovering from anesthesia following surgical or procedural interventions.
- Nurses deliver critical post-anesthesia monitoring, manage airway stability, pain control, and hemodynamic recovery until patients meet discharge or transfer criteria.
- Care is guided by Mount Sinai’s Relationship-Centered Care (RCC) model, ensuring safe, compassionate, and efficient recovery experiences.
Patient Population:
- Adult and geriatric patients recovering from general, regional, or monitored anesthesia following various surgical specialties including general surgery, orthopedics, cardiac, neurosurgery, ENT, and ambulatory procedures.
Shift & Schedule:
- Day Shift: 7:00 AM – 7:30 PM (3x12-hour shifts weekly)
- Start Date: 12/15/2025 | Contract Length: 13 weeks
- Auto-offer: Candidate must accept or decline within 2 hours
- Float Requirement: May assist within perioperative service areas as needed
Primary Responsibilities:
- Provide comprehensive post-anesthesia nursing care, monitoring vital signs, oxygenation, airway, consciousness, and pain management.
- Manage patients on ventilators, supplemental oxygen, and IV infusions during immediate recovery.
- Administer and titrate medications for pain, nausea, and hemodynamic stabilization.
- Assess surgical sites, drains, and lines; monitor for bleeding or anesthesia complications.
- Support patients through emergence, stabilization, and transfer phases of recovery.
- Collaborate with anesthesia providers, surgeons, and OR staff to ensure safe continuity of care.
- Document care and interventions accurately in Epic EMR in compliance with hospital standards.
- Maintain aseptic technique and enforce safety protocols within the PACU environment.
Skills & Procedures:
- Post-Operative Management: Airway support, hemodynamic monitoring, ventilator care, pain control, and post-anesthesia assessment.
- Emergency Response: Rapid identification and intervention for respiratory distress, hypotension, arrhythmias, and post-anesthesia complications.
- IV Therapy: Fluid resuscitation, medication administration, blood transfusion management.
- Patient Education: Reinforce discharge criteria, mobility, and pain control instructions.
- Team Collaboration: Coordination with OR, ICU, and surgical units for seamless patient transitions.
Certifications Required:
- Active NYS RN License
- BLS (AHA)
- ACLS (AHA)
- Preferred: PALS (for pediatric recovery coverage)
Education:
- BSN required (Associate degree accepted only with relevant experience or BSN enrollment)
Experience Requirements:
- Minimum 2 years of PACU experience in an acute hospital setting
- Proficient in ventilator and post-procedural care
- Epic charting experience highly preferred
- 1 year of travel experience preferred (not required for per diem roles)
Systems & Equipment:
- Charting System: Epic EMR
- Medication System: Pyxis
- Monitoring Equipment: Cardiac, oxygen saturation, end-tidal CO₂, and invasive line monitoring
- Communication: SBAR handoff protocol
Provider & Department Support:
- 24/7 anesthesia coverage for patient emergencies
- Collaborative support from surgical, respiratory, and pharmacy teams
- Direct supervision by PACU Nurse Manager and Charge Nurse
